Calcein AM is a widely used for cell tracing and membrane integrity studies. Calcein AM is cell permeable and loads into cells via incubation. Once inside the cells, it is hydrolyzed by endogenous esterase into the highly negative charged green fluorescent calcein, which is retained in the cytoplasm.
